The current Milton Town Hall evolved from the original Town Hall (1854), the town jail and jail yard (1877), and an restoration / expansion in 1985. With a population almost triple that of 1985, significant space is now required to centralize and expand existing facilities. To preserve the distinct character of previous buildings, a new, modern expansion will be located along the eastern boundary of the site, away from the historic elements. A glass walkway will connect the two buildings, one historic and one modern, and also provide spatial flexibility for various public gatherings and activities. The layering of historic and modern created by different generations of building is echoed in the materials and detailing of the proposed addition. By combining forms and materials from the surrounding context, the new building is a contemporary expression of the Town of Milton's civic identity. The interior allows for flexibility in planning and future change. The design incorporates a healthy workplace, through generous spaces, inviting materials and natural light brought together in an imaginative and creative manner.
