The new Science Building is part of a new 84,000 s.f. marine biology research facility for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, located at the historic St. Andrews Biological Station on the St. Croix River at the Bay of Fundy. The project includes replacement of existing facilities and replanning of the lower plateau of the existing campus; as well as two new research facilities. The new facilities are to replace those currently housed in the Penhallow Building, as well as in other facilities located on the lower plateau, to be demolished. Included in this is an examination of the overall site master plan, including both built form and servicing. The facilities to be constructed include the new Science Building as well as the adjacent Wet Lab Building which will house an experimental aquaculture tank environment, along with necessary prep and support facilities.
The new 49,000 s.f., three-storey Science Building will house analytical and computer labs, reference library, administration, and other support services. This will become the “front door†for the entire station and provide a focus for the revitalized lower plateau. The project as a whole is to provide a contemporary, flexible research environment to attract and retain top research talent, while providing a contemporary “fit†within the heritage of St. Andrews and the broader Maritime context. The project also addresses the federal initiatives of sustainable design, supportive workplace, and connectivity.
