Hastings Park Restoration

picture from Hastings Park Restoration

Hastings Park, Vancouver, BC

One of Vancouver’s oldest parks, Hastings Park dates back to 1889 and encompasses 66 hectares (162 acres) in the Hastings - Sunrise neighborhood in East Vancouver. Through an intensive community initiative, a restoration plan was prepared for the greening of the site. The centre piece of the plan is the daylighting of Renfrew Creek and the creation of the Sanctuary around a bioremediation pond.

The Sanctuary, the first phase of a multi-phase restoration plan, was designed to offer both riparian and upland habitat and a trail network to the public. The collection of rainwater, the separation of stormwater and sanitary sewer, and stormwater filtration are essential elements within the design of this neighborhood park.

Tours: Regular nature walks are available through Vancouver Natural History Society and the Hastings Park Stewardship Group

People's Food Co-op

, Portland, OR

In 1970, People's Food Co-op (generally called People's) set up shop in a building nearly one hundred years old that previously hosted a neighborhood grocery. The goal was to set the standard for sustainable groceries. Twenty-five years later, growing membership and an increasing customer base rendered the meager and dimly lit 2,400-square-foot space a liability to retail and office operations. To alleviate these constraints, People's renovated their existing space and grew the building to 5,400 square feet, incorporating innovative sustainable features along the way. The total project cost was approximately $900,000. From start to finish, the People's expansion demonstrates the value of viewing buildings holistically and executing integrated design processes.

Seattle Justice Center

, Seattle, WA

The Seattle Justice Center is 14-story building within the three-block Civic Center area of downtown Seattle. The Justice Center houses Seattle's municipal courts and police headquarters in a dense urban setting. The design challenge was to create distinct and unique identities for the courts and the police headquarters within one building. The combination of programs yielded a structure with two different parts: a primarily glass Courts portion that occupies the southern part of the block and a primarily stone Police portion on the northern part. The bipartite nature of the building is also reflected in the organization of the Civic Center Master Plan; both building and urban design are inextricably linked.

The Barn at Fallingwater

, Mill Run, PA

The Barn at Fallingwater is an adaptive reuse of a 19th century heavy-timber barn and its 20th century addition, framed in dimension lumber. The 19th century structure is a bank barn, built into the side of a hill so that two levels can be accessed directly from grade level. It serves as an interpretive portal for the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy's 5,000-acre Bear Run nature reserve, immediately adjacent to Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater. Beyond meeting the Conservancy's need for a program center and administrative office space, the Barn provides a living reminder of a largely vanished agrarian way of life in Western Pennsylvania. It manifests the Conservancy's mission statement: "Saving the places we care about by connecting people to the natural world."

The Plaza at PPL Center

, Allentown, PA

The Plaza at PPL Center, an urban office building, was designed and built in 18 months on a suburban real-estate budget. Located in the center of Allentown, Pennsylvania, this eight-story building is the first new downtown office development in more than 25 years and represents a major commitment to the City by the building's tenant, the PPL Corporation, a regional energy company. While the PPL Corporation occupies most of the building, the owner, Liberty Property Trust, developed one floor as speculative office space, and the plaza level of the building includes retail storefronts.

Third Creek Elementary

, Statesville, NC

After the local community decided that a new elementary school would serve their needs best, Third Creek Elementary consolidated two aging schools, one that served Kindergarten through grade 2 and another that served grades 3 through 5. Many educational and community use features are incorporated into the design. The administrative offices are located at the main entrance to have good supervision of all visitors. The grade levels are broken down into smaller "houses" comprised of two grade levels each. The gymnasium, stage, and dining room are located so they may operate after hours for community use, while the academic portion of the building is secured.

Vancouver Olympic/ Paralympic Village

picture from Vancouver Olympic/ Paralympic Village

1702 Columbia Street, Vancouver, British Columbia

The Olympic and Paralympic Village is part of the Southeast False Creek (SEFC) development. The SEFC site includes 32 hectares of formerly industrial lands which constituted the last remaining tract of undeveloped waterfront land in downtown Vancouver. The SEFC development has over 600,000 square meters of residential development, approximately 6,200 housing units, and an estimated total population ranging from 10,000 to 12,000 people. The first phase of the development, completed at the end of 2009, temporarily accommodated athletes of the 2010 Olympic/Paralympic Winter Games, after which it was converted into a high-density, mixed-use sustainable neighbourhood with approximately 1,100 housing units.

Whitman-Hanson School

, Whitman, MA

Whitman-Hanson has many "smart building" features, such as HVAC systems that detect the number of occupants and adjust HVAC settings. This project incorporates more sensors and controls than the average school building, and requires less human intervention. Other "smart building" technologies include interactive electronic white boards for the classrooms and video broadcasting.

The building was constructed to alleviate overcrowding at the old facility. The new building has been designed to use 39% less energy than a baseline building, equating to estimated savings of up to $100,000 per year in operation costs.
